In addition to our evolving and rigorous JD curriculum, UIC Law provides its students with a number of opportunities to enhance their education with extensive training, experiential clinical and externship opportunities, and opportunities in legal scholarship and advocacy.

Legal Research, Writing, Advocacy & Drafting Skills
UIC Law offers a nationally ranked legal writing curriculum, which provides extensive training in the legal skills needed to be ready to practice — legal research, advocacy, writing, and drafting.
The Lawyering Skills program includes four semesters of required courses and is one of the most comprehensive in the nation. It is designed to immerse students in the activities and skills needed to be a successful lawyer. Each of the four semesters, students are taught by a combination of full-time professors and successful practitioners who bring expertise and a practitioner’s perspective to the learning process. After the first semester, students transition to legal advocacy with a focus in the remaining semesters on pre-trial practice, oral argument, and appellate writing and oral advocacy.
UIC Law also has a number of outstanding honors programs, including two student-run journals.
- Serving on the UIC Law Review board is one of the highest academic honors the law school offers.
- Students can also grade on or write on to the UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law.
Additionally, our students have opportunities to compete in either intra- or interscholastic competitions as members of the
- Moot Court Honors Program or
- Trial Advocacy & Dispute Resolution Honors Board and Council.
Award-Winning Advocacy Results
All students receive advocacy training by participating in the Herzog Moot Court Competition as part of the Lawyering Skills program. The Law School’s Trial Advocacy & Dispute Resolution Program is also the home of the Law School’s nationally recognized advocacy competition program. The program allows students to compete on a national level in numerous advocacy competitions. Team members are prepared for competition through rigorous practice sessions conducted by the program’s faculty, adjunct faculty, and alumni.

UIC Law continues its tradition of producing practice-ready attorneys through the strength and diversity of our clinical and externship programs. Through such programs, our students experience first-hand the challenges and rewards of practicing law.
Community Legal Clinics Training
UIC Law guarantees students the opportunity to put their skills to the test in our Community Legal Clinics. Each clinic offers real-world training and opportunities for students to develop practical skills.
Externship Program
In addition to UIC Law’s Community Legal Clinics, the Law School offers more than 50 legal externship placement site opportunities.
