JD Externship Placements
Introduction
The JD Externship Program Director and your Career Services Counselor can provide guidance on the types of experience and skills you will gain in different externship settings and which is the best fit for your career goals.
JD Externship Program-Approved Externships
JD Externship Program-approved placements include judges and courts, government agencies, public interest organizations, and other non-profit entities, and in-house positions with companies, which provide a variety of practice settings options and areas of legal practice to explore. All current JD externship placements accepting applications are listed in SparkConnect.
Limited placements that require special approval are available with private law firms and current employers (review the Student Manual for more details).

Proposing New Externships
In addition to positions listed on Spark Connect, you may also independently pursue externships with courts, governmental and non-profit entities, and in-house legal departments. Limited opportunities with law firms and externships with current employers are available but require additional approval. Compensation
A student is not prohibited from receiving academic credit for an externship position for which the student is also compensated provided that the placement and experience meet all program criteria. Externship compensation arrangements are solely at the responsibility of the student and externship site.
