Through the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Law School Clinical Certification Pilot Program, the USPTO's Director of Office Enrollment and Discipline grants law degree candidates enrolled in the patent clinic courses limited recognition to practice before the USPTO, including the filing of patent applications and other matters.

The Basic Patent Clinic provides practical hands-on experience assembling a patent application for filing. Students taking the Basic Patent Clinic must register for both the class and clinic components. Students who have previously taken the Basic Patent Clinic can then register for the Advanced Patent Clinic, which focuses on the full life cycle of a patent before the USPTO.
