Student Information
UIC Law degree candidates enrolled in the IP Trademark Clinic may represent business owners and other mark owners in securing federal trademark registration for their marks. Under the direct supervision of practicing trademark attorneys, students will perform administrative functions in developing and running the clinic, conduct client intakes, advise individuals on mark availability, and provide necessary federal trademark application advice and services, including searching, opinion letters, applications, office actions, and general advice. Over the course of the semester, students will develop practical skills such as drafting, counseling, interviewing, researching, problem solving, and case management. Select students enrolled in the clinic will be admitted to practice before the USPTO under a temporary license and subject to attorney supervision.

UIC Law’s Basic Trademark Clinic provides students with hands-on experience in the fundamentals of client communications, conflicts checks, trademark searches, opinion letters, trademark applications and office actions. Students taking the Basic Trademark Clinic must register for both the class and clinic components. Students who have previously taken the Basic Trademark Clinic can then register for the Advanced Trademark Clinic, which provides opportunities to prosecute and supervise a portfolio of in-process applications, as well as new client projects that may include review, search, opinion letters, and application filings. Students will also be exposed to TTAB law, regulations and rules for opposition, cancellation, and concurrent use proceedings. The advance clinic may be repeated.
