Scholarships
IRS Externship Scholarship Heading link
This scholarship is available for students who either extern in the IRS’s Office of Chief Counsel or the IRS’s Employee Plans’ Office of Rulings and Agreement within the Tax Exempt/Government Entities Division. The latter externship is located in Washington, DC.
This scholarship may be used to offset tuition or to serve as a $5,000 stipend to defray travel, lodging, and living expenses.
Degree candidates interested in the externship and associated scholarship should submit their cover letter, resume, a writing sample, and an essay highlighting their contributions to the law school or Center to Professor Kennedy six weeks before to the semester of the externship. There is no formal application.
Sweetnam Scholarship Heading link
Each summer, a graduate employee benefits student, or a graduate tax law student pursuing a concentration in employee benefits, is selected by the Center to extern in the Office of Benefits Tax Counsel at the U.S. Department of Treasury Office of Tax Policy. That student will receive $5,000 in scholarship awards from the William F. Sweetnam, Jr. Scholarship Fund to cover some of the travel, lodging and living expenses as the student travels to Washington DC for the summer. Public recognition is made at a major Center event being hosted that spring, usually the annual Employee Benefits Symposium.
Mr. Sweetnam was the Benefits Tax Counsel for the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He created this externship, and decided to personally fund the travel expenses, after he left that position. Mr. Sweetnam has served on the Employee Benefits Advisory Board.
