Lunch & Learn Series: Civil Rights Law

This session, featuring Jordan Marsh, Founder and Principal of the Law Office of Jordan Marsh LLC, will focus on civil rights law, providing valuable insights into this impactful and dynamic legal field. Jordan has litigated hundreds of cases and has tried over 70 jury trials in state and federal court, involving premises liability, automobile accidents, false arrest, malicious prosecution, suicide in custody, intentional infliction of emotional distress, police pursuits, police excessive force, police shootings, failure to provide medical assistance, illegal search and seizures, assault and battery, and wrongful death, with injuries ranging from soft tissue injuries to catastrophic injuries to fatalities.
Jordan has been named one of 40 Illinois Attorneys Under 40 to Watch by the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin. He has taught trial advocacy classes, served as a judge for trial advocacy student competitions, and coached a trial advocacy team, in addition to serving as a faculty member for the Kirkland Institute for Trial Advocacy. Most recently, he wrote a book “Try Your Own Case,” we he takes his decades of courtroom experience and lays it all out to give unrepresented litigants a fighting chance to get the best result possible in court.

Michelle Jenkins Chappell is Assistant General Counsel for the Chicago Housing Authority. She has a long history of experience securing legal victories on the behalf of under-served populations. Michelle is a formidable advocate and policy expert who has successfully championed an impressive array of trailblazing legislation and legal precedents in Illinois.
As assistant General Counsel, Michelle serves as principal negotiator for the Chicago Housing Authority. Her primary role is to prevent litigation, negotiate settlement agreements in federal court, manage all consent decree compliance & conclusion, negotiate and advise on multi million dollar development agreements, and manage internal policy developments on behalf of the Authority.
In her former roles as Director of Legislative Affairs for the Department of Human Services and the Department of Juvenile Justice she served Governor JB Pritzker’s administration by advancing, and negotiating legislation on behalf of the administration. Michelle advanced the Children’s Behavioral Health Transformation; a multi-agency- collaboration that will streamline behavioral and mental health services for children in Illinois. Additionally, Michelle has advanced laws that: end solitary confinement in Illinois, expand access to maternal/pediatric healthcare, and supports work to curb perpetual violence in underserved neighborhoods. Michelle is a former judicial law clerk and spent four years as a fierce advocate against police brutality and misconduct as the General Counsel for the Illinois Torture Commission.
In her spare time, she serves as the CEO and Co-Founder of Amplified Voices NFP, a nonprofit dedicated to diversifying Chicago’s legal community. Michelle is an alumnus of Spelman College and Chicago’s beloved UIC Law.
