Professor Bess oversees the Law School's Externship Program and teaches courses and conducts research in the areas of professional responsibility, professionalism, and the future of legal education. Prior to joining the UIC Law faculty in 2019, Professor Bess worked as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, where she taught legal writing, thesis, and externship courses. Additionally, she served as the Executive Director of Academic Administration and Student Services, providing student services and advising and general academic administration. Professor Bess was previously the Executive Director of Loyola's Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy and the Center for Online Programs, where she oversaw operations and student services for campus-based and online students in six different degree programs. She started her legal career as an associate attorney at Winston & Strawn in Chicago, handling a variety of litigation matters. Professor Bess received her B.S. from the University of Arizona and her J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School, where she was an honors scholar and the Executive Managing Editor of the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law.
