UIC Law Prepares First Generation Graduate to Fulfill Dream of Being Entered into the Judiciary

Leah Hall

Leah Hall, a driven first-generation law student from Akron, Ohio, credits UIC Law with equipping her for every step of her legal journey, from her first day in law school to her ultimate goal of becoming a judge. Through its rigorous academics, inclusive environment, and abundant leadership opportunities, UIC Law provided Leah with the skills, confidence, and vision to navigate the complexities of the legal profession.

From her earliest days at UIC Law, Leah immersed herself in the community. She found a home with the Black Law Students Association (BLSA), where she was an active member during her 1L year. By her 2L year, Leah’s dedication earned her the role of BLSA president, where she spearheaded numerous events, including the inaugural Black Legal Summit. Her leadership extended beyond BLSA, as she also served on Dean Frossard’s Professionalism Board and worked closely with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office under Dean Clarence Glenn.

As an out-of-state student who arrived in Chicago without a local network, Leah understands the importance of building connections. She has represented UIC Law at LSAC forums across the country, sharing her experiences and inspiring future law students. Her efforts have directly influenced many students to choose UIC Law, a legacy she takes great pride in.

UIC Law prepared me in ways I didn’t even anticipate…the community, mentorship, and practical experiences have been instrumental in shaping me into the attorney—and future judge—I aspire to be.

Leah Hall, 3L

Following graduation, Leah will begin her legal career as an associate at HeplerBroom, a midsize firm in downtown Chicago, where she will work in the Insurance Defense and Coverage group. This position is just the first step in a long-term career plan fueled by ambition and a passion for justice. Leah’s ultimate goal? To become a judge.

As Leah reflects on her time at UIC Law, she attributes much of her success to the relationships she built with professors, administrators, and peers. “UIC Law provided all the tools I needed to succeed, but it was up to me to seek them out. I’ve learned that your blueprint for success is uniquely yours—it’s about making the most of every resource, relationship, and opportunity.”

With her drive, compassion, and determination, Leah Hall is poised to leave a lasting impact on the legal profession and beyond.
