This year’s theme, “Be Brave. Be Bold. Be Black.”, underscored the importance of embracing Black identity, culture, and achievements while encouraging attendees to amplify their voices in both personal and professional spaces. The event featured dynamic panel discussions, a fireside chat with esteemed judges, and a recognition segment honoring UIC Law alumni and faculty.
The first set of discussions featured Women’s & Men’s Leadership Panels, where legal professionals shared their experiences and challenges navigating the field as Black attorneys. Following this, attendees had the opportunity to explore non-traditional career paths in the JD Advantage Panel. Featuring UIC Law alumni Cymone Forde, a mergers and acquisitions attorney at IBM, and Dionte Durham, director in legal at Cognizant, the discussion highlighted alternative legal careers and how a law degree can be leveraged beyond traditional practice.
The afternoon session featured a Fireside Chat with Justice Carl A. Walker of the Illinois Appellate Court and Judge Arnette R. Hubbard of the Cook County Circuit Court (Ret.), moderated by Judge Kenya Jenkins Wright of the Cook County Circuit Court. Their insights into the legal profession, judicial experiences, and advice for aspiring attorneys made for a compelling and inspiring conversation.
The event concluded with honoring UIC Law alumna, Judge Nichole Patton of the Cook County Circuit Court, for her contributions to the legal field and UIC Law professors Danielle McCain, Kevin Hopkins, and Teri McMurtry-Chubb for their dedication to students and the advancement of legal education.
The summit provided an inspiring and affirming environment where participants championed self-expression, career growth, and advocacy for meaningful change. As UIC Law continues to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion, this event remains a vital platform for driving positive change and inspiring future generations of Black attorneys.
