From a young law clerk in the narcotics division of Cook County to the esteemed Presiding Justice of the Illinois Fourth District Appellate Court, Justice Peter C. Cavanagh’s (JD ‘97) career exemplifies a remarkable ascent through the judiciary. Guided by an early passion for justice, Justice Cavanagh began his career as an Assistant State’s Attorney, gaining invaluable experience in criminal law. His reputation for fairness and integrity led to his appointment to the Circuit Court by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2008 and to the Fourth District Appellate Court in 2018. Now, as the unanimously appointed Presiding Justice, Cavanagh’s journey reflects an unwavering dedication to the rule of law, marked by leadership, civility, and a profound commitment to justice.

Coming from a family of lawyers, Justice Cavanagh always knew that he wanted to contribute greatly to the profession. While in law school, he served as a full-time law clerk in the narcotics division at the 26th and California courthouse for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office under Jack O’Malley. Recognized for his exceptional contributions, Cavanagh was awarded the law school’s Elmer Kissane Scholarship, which honored his academic achievements and dedicated service to the State’s Attorney’s Office. He was also an active member of the Brehan Society, a group dedicated to Celtic legal traditions and values.

Upon graduating, Justice Cavanagh was appointed as an Assistant State’s Attorney under Dick Devine, where he began to build his reputation as a dedicated prosecutor. After his time in Cook County, Justice Cavanagh returned to his hometown of Springfield, where he continued his work in criminal law as both a prosecutor and public defender. His commitment to trying cases and representing his community with integrity quickly set him apart in the legal field.

In 2008, the Illinois Supreme Court appointed him to the Circuit Court, where he was later elected. In 2018, he received a second Supreme Court appointment, this time to the Illinois Fourth District Appellate Court, and subsequently won election to retain this role. His ability to handle complex legal issues with fairness and rigor led to his unanimous appointment as the Presiding Justice of the Fourth District Appellate Court, effective February 29, 2024. Additionally, he was appointed to the Illinois state Bar Association’s Capital Litigation Trial Bar, an honor for Illinois attorneys who exemplified success and dedication to the field by trying jury trials and showing an amplitude in litigating murder jury trials.

Throughout his career, Justice Cavanagh has remained committed to maintaining civility and respect in the courtroom, qualities he sees as fundamental to the integrity of the legal system.
