Former undrafted free agent for the Dallas Cowboys and sports agent to the stars Dominique Price took his talents off the field and into a classroom as the new Sports Law professor at UIC Law.

Professor Price, who always had interest in the business side of sports, even as an athlete, utilizes his personal experience in the industry as both a player and an agent to help students understand core concepts of the emerging field of Sports Law. Extending beyond the legal representation side of the industry, Professor Price’s class also focuses on learning outcomes associated with handling and managing endorsements, negotiating contracts, and even tapping into litigation work as it relates to defining parameters around NIL (name, image, likeness) deals for college and amateur athletes.

“I teach my class in a way that not just covers the core concepts, but allows the student to know what it is actually like to be in certain roles,” Professor Price said, highlighting his decision to ditch the textbooks and instead immerse the students in the work by giving them a real-life spin on the practices in the industry.

Students in Professor Price’s class participate in hands-on projects where they are tasked with negotiating a deal, debate topics based on real-life sports scenarios and get the chance to meet any special guests he brings in, like his old college roommate turned Super Bowl Champion that has spoken to his classes in the past.

Professor Price reflects on his time starting out in the industry after making the decision to attend Howard Law School to learn the business side of sports.

“It was really my parents that instilled in me that playing a sport was an avenue to take, but to always have other plans,” he said.

As a professional athlete with the Cowboys, Professor Price would attend meetings with General Counsel to better understand how things worked in the front office and off of the field. Once his professional sports career was officially over, he began to pursue the business side of the industry on both the agent and team side. Working for a law firm that had a Sports Law sector helped him gain the experience with NCAA compliance and investigations, managing compliance’s and regulations for foreign students, risk management, and protecting intellectual property rights, all of which Professor Price credits for giving him a broad yet well-rounded base of legal work needed in sports.

Professor Price saw success in agent work and eventually became a solo practitioner before joining a larger agency. After connecting with UIC Law students at a networking event hosted by the Black Men Lawyers Association, Professor Price was encouraged to bring his talents to the law school.

Sports Law came to UIC Law in Spring 2025 and is currently being offered on Wednesday evenings.
