3L Student Takes Advantage of the Global Opportunities Afforded by UIC with “Life-Changing” Study Abroad Experience in Switzerland

Stella at the united nations

For UIC Law 3L Stella McMillan, studying abroad at the University of Lucerne in Switzerland was more than just an academic opportunity—it was a chance to gain a global perspective on the law, immerse herself in a new culture, and explore the world. Over the course of four months, she would take classes in international human rights, sports law, and media law, and even get the opportunity to visit the United Nations headquarters in Geneva.

Stella’s coursework abroad offered her a fresh perspective on global legal systems. One of her favorite classes, International Human Rights, provided a comparative approach to law, contrasting U.S. perspectives with European frameworks. Her studies culminated in a visit to the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, where she had the rare opportunity to witness a live country report session.

“Seeing international law in action was eye-opening,” she said. “It reinforced the importance of global accountability, even when enforcement is limited.”

Stella credits UIC Law with equipping her with the confidence and legal foundation to thrive in an international setting.

“UIC Law’s emphasis on global perspectives really prepared me for this experience,” she said. “Courses like international law and human rights helped me engage in deep discussions with students from around the world.”

She also highlighted the school’s support system in making the transition seamless. “From ensuring my credits transferred to guiding me through course planning, UIC Law made studying abroad an attainable reality,” she said.

In addition to her academic and cultural experiences, Stella embraced her passion for adaptive sports while abroad. She played wheelchair basketball for the RC Zentralschweiz club teams—including the Swiss Ladies, the Hurricanes, and the Youngsters—further connecting her to the local community and deepening her experience in Switzerland beyond the classroom.

UIC Law encourages students to take advantage of global opportunities, and I felt fully prepared to navigate a new legal education system.

For law students considering studying abroad, Stella offers practical advice. She emphasizes the importance of planning early—securing externships, taking the MPRE in advance, and even landing a post-graduation job before departure.

“It’s all about timing,” she said. “If you handle logistics beforehand, you can fully enjoy the experience.”

Reflecting on her journey, Stella describes it as an invaluable opportunity that expanded her worldview and professional aspirations. “I never got to study abroad in undergrad, so this was my chance,” she said. “I’m incredibly grateful for the experience—it was truly life-changing.”
