The JD Externship Program Director and your Career Services Counselor can provide guidance on the types of experience and skills you will gain in different externship settings and which is the best fit for your career goals.

JD Externship Program-approved placements include judges and courts, government agencies, public interest organizations, and other non-profit entities, which provide a variety of practice settings options and areas of legal practice to explore. Limited placements that require special approval are available with private law firms (review the Student Manual for more details). All current JD externship placements accepting applications are listed in Symplicity.
Independent Externships Heading link
You may also independently pursue externships with governmental and non-profit entities. Limited opportunities with law firms are available but require additional approval. Contact the JD Externship Program at law-externships@uic.edu for clarification on whether your proposed placement can be approved for credit.
