Newly Admitted Graduate (LLM/MJ) Students Loan & Financial Aid Application Procedures

Financial Aid for the Academic Year (Fall & Spring Semesters) Heading link

Continuing students must reapply for financial aid every year. Any student who wishes to receive student loans must complete the following forms:

Loans
Loan instructions and requirements will be provided with the award letter email notification. Students should not apply for loans until an award letter notification has been received.

Federal Stafford Loan [Unsubsidized]
All students applying for Stafford Loans are required to complete the FAFSA application. The borrower is responsible for interest that accrues while he or she is in school. As of July 1, 2017, the interest rate on Unsubsidized Stafford Loans is fixed at 5.84% per academic year. The program is available for an annual total of up to $20,500. As of October 1, 2017, there is a 1.066% origination fee that is taken off the principal loan amount requested. Students must complete an Entrance Counseling Quiz and Master Promissory Note.

Grad PLUS or Private Educational Loans
If you need more funding than what is available through the Federal Stafford Loan program, you may wish to borrow a Grad PLUS or private educational loan. As of July 1, 2017, Grad PLUS loans have a fixed interest rate of 7%. As of October 1, 2017, there is a 4.264% origination fee that is taken off the principal loan amount requested. Private loan interest rates are variable and depend on one’s credit. Please keep in mind that you can only borrow up to your “budget” (cost of attendance), which is indicated on your award letter, minus any aid or scholarships. Students must complete a Grad Plus Entrance Counseling Quiz and a Grad Plus Master Promissory Note.

Students are responsible for their own expenses prior to the actual disbursing of refunds after the add/drop period each term. The Business Office in the CBA Building, 15th Floor, handles all refunds. They can be contacted at 312.427.2737 ext. 408.

Financial Aid for Spring Semester Only Heading link

(For students who were admitted or are returning in January for the spring semester.)

If you have not borrowed Federal Stafford Loans during the fall semester of the current academic year (at UIC John Marshall or another school), you may be eligible to borrow up to $20,500 during the spring semester. Beginning the following academic year (August-May), you may be eligible to borrow up to $20,500 for the upcoming academic year, but it will be evenly distributed over the fall and spring semesters.

Financial Aid for Online Students* Heading link

Please note, online only LLM/MJ students will be eligible to borrow for tuition, fees and limited living expenses. The only budget increase request form that will be accepted is for a laptop/computer purchase. This is a one-time increase while a student studies at the Law School. Forms are available during the first week of classes each semester.

Initially loans will be split and disburse evenly each semester. Budgets will automatically be adjusted based on the credit hours a student is registered for each semester.

* A student is considered an online student if all of their registered credits are for online courses.
