What should I do if I notice a student who is disturbed or disturbing to others, but he/she hasn’t broken any rules?
The Office of Student Life & Leadership would like to remind you about the Student Support & Emergency Team (SSET Team), which is an important resource at the Law School available to all students.
Established in 2017 by the Law School administration, the SSET Team is a standing group of administrators and faculty members who assist law students experiencing a variety of personal and institutional stressors, including academic concerns, personal and relationship challenges, financial difficulties, and medical and emotional difficulties. The SSET Team works to provide law students with appropriate responses and resources that are timely, effective, and unintrusive.
Law students, faculty, and staff can refer issues and emergencies directly to any member of the SSET Team, or may contact the group as a whole by emailing SSET@jmls.edu from a Law School email address. Importantly, all reports are made in confidence.
Current SSET Team members are:
- Jennifer Pope (Chair), Assistant Dean for Student Life & Leadership
- Clarence Glenn, Director, Student Activities & Leadership Development
- Ali Haleem, Director, Campus Safety & Security
- Megan Kreminski, Assistant Director, Academic Achievement Program
- Tania Luma, Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
- Jake McMillan, Assistant Director, Recruitment & Outreach, Centers for Excellence
- Anita Nelson, Executive Director, Financial Aid
- Shakira Pleasant, Assistant Professor of Law; Director, Writing Resource Center
- Zach Sanderson, Student Life Coordinator
- Rebekah Saunders, Registrar
- Julie Spanbauer, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs
- Gretchen Quattlebaum, Counseling Center Coordinator; Consultant (The Counseling Center does not share information on their clients with the Law School without client permission.)
If we learn that you may be in need of support, we will discuss your situation discreetly within the SSET team to identify helpful resources and applicable policies. A member of the SSET team will then reach out to you to share information or ask about other ways that the school may be able to assist you. If there are things that we can’t handle ourselves, we may discuss your case with the Dean of Students at UIC for additional resources and support.
Faculty and staff at UIC John Marshall recognize that law school presents students with many challenges, both inside and outside the classroom. The SSET Team is part of our continued commitment to your success, safety, and well-being as a UIC John Marshall student.
