The IHRC traveled to Guatemala City to attend 195th Period of Sessions before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights from March 9-14, 2026. The team saw first-hand how international human rights mechanisms hear human rights issues within the context of a broader normative framework in international human rights.

Additionally, the team of students met with human rights lawyers from the Center for Justice and International Law and learned the important advocacy work that they perform in the protection of regional human rights in the Americas and the Caribbean.

As part of their learning regarding Guatemala’s history, culture, and natural environment, the students visited the National Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, the Museum of Popol Vuh at the Universidad Francisco Marroquín, the National Palace, and Lake Atitlán.

They learned about Mayan culture and its importance in culture and environmental preservation visiting Atitlán Women Weavers, women’s cooperative, and the local cacao artisanal industry.
