The Ellen A. (Nell) Hennessy Employee Benefits Moot Court Competition is held annually by the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel & Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law. Students get the opportunity to argue before experienced ERISA practitioners. Past judges have included the former Assistant Secretary for the Employee Benefits Security Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor; Hon. Phyllis C. Borzi, former Benefits Tax Counsel of the U.S. Department of the Treasury; Hon. George H. Bostick, Director of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation; and Hon. W. Thomas Reeder Jr. Past competition problems have addressed complex issues arising under ERISA-covered plans, such as the legal standards that courts should apply when reviewing a plan administrator’s claim denials.
