The American Bar Association National Appellate Advocacy Competition focuses on constitutional law issues. More than 180 teams from 110 law schools compete in six regional competitions. Semifinalists teams at regional competitions advance to the National competition here in Chicago.
Previous topics include the following: (1) whether felon disenfranchisement laws violates the Fourteenth Amendment; and (3) whether a judge violated the sentencing reform act when requiring a student to pass out flyers on campus regarding his crime.
In 2011, the team of Stephanie Kempfer, Zachary Morris, and Brian Roth were Semifinalists. In 2010, the team of Joel Bruckman, Michael Murphy, and Stephanie Potter were Octofinalists and won the Fourth Best Brief award. In 2009, Matt Kellam, Venus Brown, John Ochoa were Semifinalists at the regional round.
